September 17, 2023Dear Parishioners and Friends of Our Lady of Guadalupe,
Every time we pray the OUR FATHER we pray: “Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who have trespassed against us.” How often do we take seriously those words that Jesus taught us to pray?
Forgiveness is one of the hardest things to do, especially when the hurt was deep and often from our own family. Today’s readings all deal with forgiveness.
The Book of Sirach tells us that anger and hateful things are often hugged by sinners. If we don’t let go we are never at peace within ourselves. I always thank God that He is our final judge…He is so full of mercy and compassion. The Psalm today tells us: “The Lord is kind and merciful, slow to anger, and rich in compassion”…Thank You, Lord for your mercy!
Finally, in the Gospel, we hear of the man who was forgiven his debts and went out and didn’t forgive another man who owed him a debt even less than his. Jesus reminds us that we must forgive our sisters and brothers from our heart if we desire God’s Compassion.
I often pray for those who have hurt me and those whom I love. I pray that God will forgive them for me. I mustn’t hold onto hatred and lack of forgiveness. Life is too short to destroy the peace I need each day.
